What did you think? Yes, that's what I am saying, rape means violence! I'm sure you're thinking... there goes another gender activist or feminist. Well I am not! I"m not carrying women's problems on my shoulders. I just feel strongly about rape (which so happens to be a crime often against women) and so I believe rape equals murder and therefore should be sanctioned by the capital punishment, death. I'm not being harsh, trust me.If you think I am then try living the life -or what is left of it -of a rape victim.
All over the world rape is an under reported crime for the obvious reasons. It is the canal knowledge of a female of 16 years or above without her consent.(Domestic Violence Act) After rape, a woman may live with physical scars in some cases temporarily. They live in fear everyday, reliving the trauma through nightmares, anxiety, paranoia, etc. This form of abuse haunts a victim to her grave. Many women after the experience pick up drug/alcohol addiction, become disconnected from society or are stigmatized, ending up in mental or rehabilitation institutions. Though some women survive it and are able to move on somewhat, their lives remain changed forever...they're scarred for life! But is this life? If you ask me, NO! That's existing on a planet without the ability to live (enjoy a life).
After rape a woman dies while she is alive. And what happens to the cowards guilty of such heinous act a sentence of 5 to 25 years in prison. In some cultures the victims are pressured by family to forgive and marry her offender. Hogwash!
Five men and a minor in India are on trial for raping and killing a medical student in a bus. The poor girl died after she was sent to the hospital in a terrible condition. She represents the many women whose lives are taken from them by rapists. My point- when you rape someone, you kill the person and that's murder.
India's authorities waited till this problem got to such heights, but my wuestion to Ghanaian authourities - will we do same? Our laws have come far, true. But there should be some hardcore legislation with regard to punishing rape. That's my call! What's yours?
xoxo

I hope we do not get to such abonimable heights as a country. But thing is that, we must work towards maintaining the dignity and respect of women. We nee enough laws, advocates and campaigns that promote the welfare of our mothers, sisters, nieces, aunties, etc.
